DfE: Constitution of Governing Bodies of Maintained Schools - Statutory Guidance

This guidance is about the constitution of governing bodies and their size, membership and skills. It also explains the arrangements for the constitution of governing bodies of maintained schools constituted under the School Governance (Constitution) (England) Regulations 2012.

All governing bodies of maintained schools are required to be constituted under the School Governance (Constitution) (England) Regulations 2012 or the School Governance (Federations) (England) Regulations 2012, as appropriate, by 1 September 2015.

DfE: The School Governance Regulations 2013 - departmental advice for school leaders and governing bodies

This is advice from the Department for Education. This advice is non-statutory, and has been produced to help governors understand their obligations and duties in relation to the School Governance (Roles, Procedures and Allowances) (England) Regulations 2013 as amended by the School Governance (Roles, Procedures and Allowances) (England) (Amendment) Regulations 2013.

DfE: External Reviews of Governance: What's Involved

Ofsted introduced external reviews of governance into the inspection framework in autumn 2012. The September 2015 School Inspection Handbook requires inspectors to recommend a review in any school where in their judgement ‘governance is weak’. Guidance on what is involved is available here.

Education Funding Agency: Schools Financial Value Standard and Assurance (SFVS)

The SFVS helps schools to manage their finances and to provide assurance to the local authority that they have secure financial management in place.

As governing bodies have formal responsibility for the financial management of their schools, the standard is primarily aimed at them.
